Amy Jenson, Ph.D. glaciology student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, is studying the velocity of Greenland Ice Sheet glaciers that flow into the ocean. These glaciers often exhibit seasonal changes in velocity, influencing the amount of ice lost from the ice sheet. She tested different glacier geometries to explore the different kinds of observed behaviors. She presented the research Thursday at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco. Amy and other UAF scientists will be traveling to Greenland over the next two years to study how meltwater and the ocean affect glacial ice loss. It is a four-year research project funded by a $565,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) Science Foundation grant.
